We encourage STSC majors to study abroad.  The STSC major does not operate its own programs; students should link to Penn Abroad for information on specific programs and the process of applying.

How many courses from study abroad can count toward the STSC Major?
  • Study abroad courses may only by counted toward the submajor requirement
  • Up to two courses relevant to the topic of the submajor may be accepted for credit in the major.

How do courses from abroad get onto the transcript?

  • Courses taken abroad must be submitted to XCat for approval by the department
  • Courses taken abroad will appear on the transcript as STSC 298
  • They will appear on the transcript after submission to XCat, approval by the department, approval by the College, and receipt of the courses and grades from the study abroad site

STSC majors interested in studying abroad should carefully plan how and when to fulfill their core major requirements and department electives at Penn before and after being abroad.

Note: going abroad in spring of junior year will preclude writing a senior thesis, since thesis writers are required to take STSC 400 in the spring of their junior year.
