The theme of this year’s festival is “Frankenstein”. Two hundred years ago the remarkable story of a creature produced by a scientific experiment was published for the first time. Its author was 20-year old Mary Shelley. Her vision is now an inescapable allegory of the modern world and seems only to become more relevant with the passing years. Neuroscientists are working on brain-computer interfaces, neural implants and artificial limbs. Geneticists are making rapid progress with new gene editing technologies. Sober bioethical discussions of risks and benefits need to consider how to manage not only these new technologies but also the lessons and limits of the Frankenstein allegory. This year’s films - a classic, a comedy and a futuristic film noir- taken together illustrate both the versatility and the staying power of Shelley’s tale.
