HSOC Senior Sonya Davey wins Gates and Thouron Awards!

Sonya Davey will be graduating from University of Pennsylvania in May.  She is majoring in Health and Societies, South Asian Studies (Sanskrit) and Biology.  She won the Gates Cambridge Scholarship (http://gatescambridge.org/) and will be going to Cambridge to do a one-year MPhil in Medical Anthropology starting this fall.  She is applying to medical schools this summer for 2015.

She also won the Thouron Award (http://www.upenn.edu/pennnews/news/university-pennsylvania-announces-2014-thouron-award-winners) to study in any school in UK.  Thouron pays more than Gates, but the latter is considered more prestigious like Rhodes.

She also leads a team that has developed a novel ultrasound technology that strives to curb female feticide in India by automatically blurring the genitalia of the fetus in live images produced by ultrasound machines.  Her team has won several awards totaling $17,000 so far.
