Research Interests:

Erica is studying international health interventions in South Africa, and is intrigued by questions relating to the complex negotiations between local, global and national knowledge production around heath and disease that have profound effects on sick and healthy bodies. Her dissertation, “Dying in a world of eXtremes: The Making of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB)” will use the emergence of XDR-TB to study the process of scientific inquiry through which scientists engage in the difficult task of defining scientific categories that also have profound policy implications. In addition she will use ethnography to ask what it means to be suffering from an illness of global significance.
