About the Department

History and Sociology of Science uses the tools of the humanities and social sciences to study science, technology, and medicine. Its scholars examine and elucidate the relations between the technical practice of scientists, engineers, medical researchers, and clinicians, and the material, social, political and cultural context in which those practices occur.

Programs

Health and Societies

Undergraduate

The Health and Societies major examines issues of health and medicine in their social, cultural and historical context, combining courses from the program with courses from across the university in the social sciences and humanities. Its graduates go on to work in health professions or on health issues in law, government, journalism, and business.

Science, Technology and Society

Undergraduate

The STS major combines the history of technology, the study of natural and social sciences, and the humanities to explore the relationship between technology and science, and the social, cultural, political and material environment in which these practices occur. It uses an interdisciplinary approach for students interested in law, government, journalism, business, research, and education.
